Bob Marley: One Love

The character is not complex here, the character here is really very heroic and very admirable... the issue with that is, that the feature film has a blandness at its heart that I actually don't think was part of the story.

For all the music in it, I don't think you get a real feel for [Bob Marley's] creative process.

This is a real disappointment.

[It's] a worthy addition to the features, docs, series and books that will continue to explore facets of the reggae superstar’s existence. This may not be the ultimate Marley narrative, but this project respectfully keeps his memory and mission alive.

Considering this is unlikely to be the last attempt to dramatise Marley’s life story, next time it wouldn’t hurt if a Jamaican filmmaker had a go.

His music and ideas—and all the people who helped usher them into this fractured world—deserve better.

Were it not for the power of the music, and the fidelity of Ben-Adir and Lynch’s performances, this film would be a dud.

The real star of the show is the music itself. It’s just one damn great song after another; Marley was reggae’s greatest tunesmith and lyricist, laying down spectacularly produced tracks that are yet to be equaled.
