Wicked Little Letters

The performances of Buckley and Colman rescue much of what’s salvageable in the narrative and there’s some interest in how the truth will be revealed but the movie isn’t as funny as it needs to be for the satirical elements to work.

Colman and Buckley know how to make this material sing, and there are moments when both actors managed to make me squeeze out an authentic tear or two, only to have me enthusiastically giggling a scene or two later.

The range of insults sprinkled in with a healthy dose of f-bombs is truly awe-inspiring. The letters are spicy for the villagers, but for a modern-day audience, they're just delightfully silly.

It’s saved, first by strong performances from Buckley, always effortlessly believable, and Colman, expert at laying bare the clammy soul of easily dismissible women. And second, by the letters themselves...

So much fun, ridiculous, and at the end of the day it's a women's empowerment movie in an odd sort of way.

WICKED LITTLE LETTERS is hysterical. The way Olivia Colman reacts to the vulgar things being said about her in those early scenes is worth the price of admission alone.

It's a comedy of manners, whose broad humor never connected with me.

It is a lighthearted film that doesn’t fully grasp the red-hot rage at its center.

It’s a sophisticated little comedy when all is said and done — with about as many F-bombs as a crime drama to boot.
