Character back story: Sookie was the youngest of two children. Sookie's mind-reading ability was apparent from birth, though most people refused to acknowledge that she was able to literally read minds. Her telepathic powers manifested as a child, and it is indicated in the books that her parents thought she may have been subject to a mental illness, and was treated as such. However, Sookie does tell of one point when her father asked her to "listen" in on a business meeting to discern the true intentions of another person. She told her father the man was intending to take his money and run. Her parents died when she was 7 years old, leaving her and her older brother Jason to be raised by her grandmother.

One night, when vampire Bill Compton walked into the bar, her life had been changed forever. She was launched into a world which was both thrilling and terrifying, given that her mind reading ability was seen as something desirable by the vampire community

Character Quotes & Catchphrases
Sookie Stackhouse: [surprised] You're alive?
Bill Compton: Technically, no.

Sookie: How old are you? Am I allowed to ask that?
Bill: I was made a vampire in 1865, when I was thirty human years old.
Sookie: Wow, you look older than that.
Bill: Life was harder then.
Sookie: Were you in the Civil War?
Bill
: I was.
Sookie: Would you be willing to come and talk to my grandmother's club? It's mostly a bunch of old people who had family in the war. They call themselves Descendants of the Glorious Dead.
Bill
: [incensed] The glorious dead? There is nothing glorious about dying in a war. A bunch of starving, freezing boys killing each other so that the rich can stay rich. Madness.
Sookie
: [pause] I'm sure it was awful.
Bill
: Would it make you happy if I did this?
Sookie
: Oh, it would make my grandmother ecstatic.
Bill: Would it make you happy?
Sookie
: Well... yes.
Bill: I'll do it then. I look forward to meeting your grandmother. When may I call on you?
Sookie: I'm off work tomorrow.
Bill
: Just after dark then.

Character Quotes & Catchphrases
Flora: One day when my mother and father were singing together in the forest, a great storm blew up out of nowhere. But so passionate was their singing that they did not notice, nor did they stop as the rain began to fall, and when their voices rose for the final bars of the duet a great bolt of lighting came out of the sky and struck my father so that he lit up like a torch. And at the same moment my father was struck dead my mother was struck dumb! She never spoke another word.

Ada: I have told you the story of your father many many times.
Flora: Oh, tell me again! Was he a teacher?
Ada: Yes.
Flora: How did you speak to him?
Ada: I didn't need to speak. I could lay thoughts out in his mind like they were a sheet.
Flora: Why didn't you get married?
Ada: He became frightened and stopped listening.

Flora: Actually, to tell you the whole truth, Mother says that most people speak rubbish, and it's not worth it to listen.
Aunt Morag: Well, that is a strong opinion.
Flora: Aye. It's unholy.

Flora: I know why Mr. Baines can't play the piano. She never gives him a turn. She just plays whatever she pleases and sometimes she doesn't play at all.
Stewart: And when is the next lesson?
Flora: Tomorrow.

Flora: [speaking to Aunt Morag] My mother met my father when she was an opera singer in Luxembourg.
Ada: [signing] That's enough.
Flora: Why?
[pos]

Stewart: Where's your mother? Where's she off to?
Flora: TO HELL!

Fun facts/trivia:Nine years after they played father and daughter in Fly Away Home (1996), Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin filmed a sex scene together for The Squid and the Whale (2005). Daniels said in interview at the time that the way they coped with filming the sex scene was by trying "not to think about...you know, geese."

Based on the true story of William Lishman's and Joseph Duff's experiments on migrating birds. Lishman and Duff provided actual "imprinted" birds for the making of the film, as well as the actual aircraft used.
