| Character back story: Sookie was the youngest of two children. Sookie's mind-reading ability was apparent from birth, though most people refused to acknowledge that she was able to literally read minds. Her telepathic powers manifested as a child, and it is indicated in the books that her parents thought she may have been subject to a mental illness, and was treated as such. However, Sookie does tell of one point when her father asked her to "listen" in on a business meeting to discern the true intentions of another person. She told her father the man was intending to take his money and run. Her parents died when she was 7 years old, leaving her and her older brother Jason to be raised by her grandmother.

| Character back story: Rogue (Marie was her actual first name) runs away from home after her power manifests itself by accidentally draining the life from her boyfriend while she is kissing him. This causes him to have a seizure, and places him in a coma for 3 weeks.
Rogue adopts her new alias and wanders into a bar, where she witnesses Wolverine getting into an altercation with some patrons. She later catches up to Wolverine and convinces him to get her a lift in his truck. The two talk and seem to develop a father-daughter like relationship. On the road, both are attacked by another mutant, Sabretooth, who is Magneto's henchman, but they are rescued by two X-Men, Storm and Cyclops. Then, Rogue integrates as another student of Charles Xavier, in his special school of mutant (gifted) children.
As Magneto knows that Rogue has the power to steal any mutant's power temporarily after such mutant is touched by her, Magneto plans to use her to power his genetic altering machine. She is later saved by the X-men & Wolverine when she is put into the device atop the statue of liberty

Rogue: I don't want you to go.
[Logan looks around at his small pack of stuff and then undoes his dog tags. Then he takes her hand, places them inside, then pushes her fingers over them. She looks up at him]
Logan: I'll be back for this.
[He turns and walks out the door with her staring after him, smiling]

Bobby: You're so dead.
Rogue: No, you're dead.
[they get closer and Bobby leans in for a kiss]
Rogue: I don't want to hurt you.
Bobby: I'm not afraid.
