Ayumi Hamasaki is a Japanese singer-songwriter, director, producer and actress. Also known as "Ayu" by her fans, Hamasaki has been dubbed by the media as the "Empress Of J-Pop" due to her massive popularity and widespread influence of Japanese Pop culture in Asia.

Because of her constantly changing image and tight control over her artistry, her popularty extends all across Asia and beyond with fashion/music/other entertainment trends she began in Japan are now popular worldwide in countries such as France, China, Germany, Thailand, Korea and Taiwan. It is has been ascertained that Hamasaki has appeared in over 680 commercials and television adversticements throughout her enitre career, the purpose of which was to promote both the product and herlself in the market.

Since her 1998 debut with the single "Poker Face", Hamasaki has managed to sell well over 70 million records worldwide (see
www.en.wikipedia.org/AyumiHamasakidiscography), ranking her among the world's best selling artists and also as one of Japan's highest selling musical acts. As a female artist, Hamasaki holds several domestic records; such as the most number ones, the most million sellers and the highest record sales (approximately 50 million in Japan alone, according to the Oricon). But as an artist (category for both male and female) Hamasaki is the only one to have one single each year from 1999 to 2009 to debut at No. 1 on the Oricon, one album debut at No.1 on the Oricon from 1999-2009 and becoming the only female artist to reach the 50 million mark in record sales (the only other other two who are both male are Mr.Children and B'z.) She also hold two other records, one being the only female artist history to have four of her music videos listed among the world's most expensive music videos namely: "Fairyland", "Jewel", "My Name's "Women" and "Green" and the other is being the only Asian artist mentioned in that very list.
