Fun facts/trivia:

* Keith Richards agreed to appear as Jack Sparrow's father and the keeper of the pirate code. He had been pursued for an appearance since the first installment of the series.

* The character of the pirate lord Mistress Ching is likely inspired by the real-life Chinese pirate Cheng I Sao (or Ching Yih Saou), who controlled the South China Sea with her large pirate fleet in the early 1800s.

* The flags hoisted by the pirate fleet are based on actual flags of real-world pirates. We see (in no particular order) the flags of: Christopher Moody (red flag with a winged chalice, arm & knife, and skull on crossbones), Thomas Tew (an arm with a cutlass), De Vranck (a man clubbing a skull & crossbones), Bartholomew "Black Bart" Roberts (a man dancing with a skeleton who holds a spear), and Edward Low (a red skeleton). The flag hoisted by the Black Pearl is that of John "Calico Jack" Rackham (a skull and crossed cutlasses).

* The film is the first in the series in which Capt. Barbossa's first name, Hector, is said. Interestingly, the writers did not initially plan on giving the character a first name: on the commentary for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Johnny Depp jokingly said that Barbossa's name was Hector; this comment was misinterpreted by fans to be the character's actual name, and thus left the writers to feel that they had no choice but to include it in the series.

* The bone cages on Cannibal Island were actually made of styrofoam.

* While the script for the second movie was being written, Keira Knightley suggested the scene between Jack and Elizabeth where Jack is handcuffed to the ship.

* Actually, all of Davy Jones's crew were actors. They all wore dark gray motion-capture suits and before they could be filmed they had to be scanned in order for the computer to place the crew images over the top. Bill Nighy wore makeup around his eyes and mouth in case computer rendering failed to look realistic during extreme close ups (fortunately this was never needed).
Character Quotes & Catchphrases

  • Davey Jones: You are neither dead nor dying. What is your purpose here? Will Turner: [quickly] Jack Sparrow sent me to settle his debt. Davey Jones: What is your purpose here? Will Turner: Jack Sparrow? Sent me to settle his debt? Davey Jones: [laughs] Did he, now? I'm sorely tempted to accept that offer.
  • Davey Jones: I wonder, Sparrow, can you live with this? Can you condemn an innocent man, a friend, to a lifetime of servitude in your name while you roam free? Jack Sparrow: [thinks for a second] Yep. I'm good with it.
  • Davey Jones: Do you fear... death? Do you fear that dark abyss? All your deeds laid bare, all your sins punished?
  • Davy Jones: Life is cruel! Why should the afterlife be any different?
  • Davy Jones: James Norrington, do you fear death? [with his last breath, Norrington stabs Jones] Davy Jones: I'll take that as a "no".
  • Davy Jones: Ha ha... Lookie here boys. A lost bird. A lost bird that never learned to fly! Jack Sparrow: To my great regret. But, it's never too late to learn! [uses the Dead Man's Chest to trigger a line to pull him up to the Flying Dutchman's mast]

Character name:
Victor

Appears in: Underworld/ Underworld: Evolution/ Underworld: Rise of the Lycans

Date(s)and Award(s):

*Underworld - September 2003 - 1 win & 7 nominations

*Underworld: Evolution - January 2006 - 1 nomination

*Underworld: Rise of the Lycans - January 2009
Character back story: 1400 years ago, Vampires had decided that the best way to ensure the survival of their species was for three Elders--Viktor, Marcus, and Amelia--to 'leap frog' through time, one ruling while the other two slept, each being awakened at their appointed time according to a never-to-be-broken covenant. 1,000 years ago, during the reign of Viktor, the oldest and strongest of the Elders, the Vampire-Lycan War began. Many years ago, Lycans were the renfields for Vampires, but it was forbidden for Vampires and Lycans to fraternize. Lucian and Viktor's daughter Sonja fell in love and mated, creating a hybrid child that Viktor would not allow, so he (Viktor) placed Sonja, his own daughter in the sun where she burnt to a crisp while Lucian was made to watch--'His own daughter burnt alive just for loving me,' says Lucian poignantly--and Viktor has spent the last 600 years exterminating the Lycan species so the bloodlines will never blend. Selene reminded him of Sonja, so he spared her and raised her as his own. For some time he was deep in slee, until Selene awaken him a full century ahead of schedule for his guidance.

Fun facts/trivia:
* The 'attack dogs' outside of the vampire mansion were actually very docile and playful canines, which were the only dogs available at the time. For the scene where they chase Scott Speedman, director Len Wiseman had to film short clips of the dogs running and later put in sounds of vicious barking. If you look closely though you can see their tails happily wagging back and forth.

* Kate Beckinsale's character Selene is not seen speaking until roughly 12 minutes into the film, however her narration starts almost as soon as the movie does.
Character Quotes & Catchphrases
  • Selene: It wasn't the Lycans. It was you. How could you bare my trust knowing that you killed my family? Viktor: Yes, I have taken from you but I have given so much more. Is it not a fair trade for life I have granted you? The gift of immortality? Selene: And the life of your daughter? Your own flesh and blood? Viktor: I loved my daughter. But the abomination growing in her womb was a betrayal of me and the coven. I did what was necessary to protect the species. As I am forced to do yet again.
  • Viktor: I gave you your life.
    Lucian: You gave me chains.
Viktor: I thought you would have learned by now after all these years; you cannot have one without the other.
  • [William has been shot through his limbs by chains, and dragged to the ground. Marcus comes back unexpectedly.]
    Viktor: Marcus!
Marcus: He was not to be harmed. Place him in my charge, as we agreed, or you will pay for your deceit.
Viktor: And you will learn your place. Your sympathy for this beast is foolish. Your brother is entirely beyond control. It will be done *my* way.
Marcus: You know well the consequences if your murder me. Or William.
Viktor: If you so much as speak his name again you will have chosen that future for him.
[Marcus looks to his sides - Viktor's warriors have their crossbows poised at him.]
Marcus: What is thy will... my lord?
Viktor: Imprisonment for all time. Far from you.
  • Viktor: [to Sonja] Without the loyalty between us... We are no better than the beasts at our door.
  • Viktor: What's... this... *ruckus*?

Character name: Billy Mack

Fun facts/trivia:
* The scene where Kris Marshall's character Colin (accidentally) insults the caterer's food to her face, was originally written as a scene for Hugh Grant's character in Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), but was cut from that film. * Rowan Atkinson's character was initially supposed to be an angel and disappear as he walked away from Liam Neeson's character in the airport scene. * When David (Hugh Grant) addresses his speech to the press, after the meeting with the President of the United States, he talks about the great things about Britain and candidly mentions 'Harry Potter.' Several actors from this film have ties to the Harry Potter film series. 'Emma Thompson' and Alan Rickman both appeared in the Harry Potter movies as teachers, 'Sybil Trelawney' and 'Severus Snape'. In addition, 'Hugh Grant' was set to appear in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) and was originally cast as Gilderoy Lockhart. Grant left the film due to scheduling conflicts. *A speech given by Hugh Grant in ‘Love Actually’ - where he extols the virtues of Great Britain and refuses to cave to the pressure of its longstanding ally, the United States - was etched in the transatlantic memory as a satirical, wishful statement on the concurrent Bush-Blair relationship. Tony Blair responded by saying in 2005, "I know there's a bit of us that would like me to do a Hugh Grant in ‘Love Actually’ and tell America where to get off. But the difference between a good film and real life is that in real life there's the next day, the next year, the next lifetime to contemplate the ruinous consequences of easy applause."
Character Quotes & Catchphrases
  • Parky: This must be a very exciting moment for you, fighting for the Christmas Number One. How's it looking so far? Billy Mack: Very bad indeed... Blue are outselling me five to one. But I'm hoping for a late surge. And if I reach Number One, I promise to sing the song stark naked on TV on Christmas Eve. Parky: Do you mean that? Billy Mack: Well of course I mean it, Michael. Do you want a preview, you old flirt? [stands in front of Parky and flashes at him] Parky: *That'll* never make Number One!

  • Billy Mack: I realized that Christmas is... is the time to be with the people you love. Joe: Right. Billy Mack: And I realized that, as dire chance and... and... and fateful cockup would have it, here I am, mid-50s, and without knowing it I've gone and spent most of my adult life with a... with a chubby employee. And... and much as it grieves me to say it, it... it might be that the people I love is, in fact... you. [pause] Joe: Well, this is a surprise. Billy Mack: Yeah. Joe: Ten minutes at Elton John's, you're as gay as a maypole!
  • Billy Mack: Hiya kids. Here is an important message from your Uncle Bill. Don't buy drugs. Become a pop star, and they give you them for free!
  • [Billy's record makes #1 at Christmas; he gets a phone call] Billy Mack: Hello? Elton! Of course. Of, of course! Send an embarrassingly big car and I'll be there!
