These included James Bond's arch-nemesis Blofeld in "Diamonds Are Forever", the Criminologist in cult hit "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and various Hammer horrors and war films. The 6ft 2 actor often played villainous or cold characters - but he was often called upon for Shakespearean roles, for instance Julius Caesar in the BBC adaptation of 1978 and, later, the Duke of York in the same series' "Richard II" and later still, a slightly camped-up Pandarus in "Troilus and Cressida". He was often used in commercials on account of his honeyed tones, and played an excellent Mycroft Holmes in the series in which Jeremy Brett played The Great Detective. He died of cancer in 2000.

I would say his greatest moments were portrayals of literary figures: who can forget his Julius Caesar (BBC, 1978) or his Pandarus ("Troilus and Cressida", BBC, 1982)? His portrayal of Mycroft Holmes in Granada TV's Sherlock Holmes series is joyous to behold, also.

In my opinion the late Charles Gray was one of the very finest English actors who radiated an erudite yet quietly powerful, confident class and style which was underrated.
His presence as 'Mocata' and 'Blofeld' was unbeatable in extoling beautiful enunciation, structure and syntax of the English language. As far as Bond baddies go he is the master - others have been good - but tiny amateurs by any comparison.
