On October 23, news emerged that Christian was chosen to play Jacob in "Hey, Hey, It's Esther Blueburger".



Like any 12-year-old, Christian Byers is into music and footy - he's a huge Swans fan - and uses the word "cool" a lot.



Unlike most, though, he is mates with Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, and as an actor he has two feature films under his belt.



His first, Opal Dream, starring Vince Colosimo and Jacqueline McKenzie, has its Australian premiere at the weekend as part of the Little Big Shots children's film festival which opens today.



The film was partly shot in Coober Pedy, an experience Byers enjoyed, apart from one small thing: "It was great, but as many wonderfully, beautifully, phantasmagorically great things they've got, they've got a bit of a bad thing: the flies. Oh man, they swarm all over your face and they're unkillable. You see one on your arm and in a nanosecond it's on your nose."



Byers lives in the inner west and attends Fort Street High in Petersham, where his schoolmates sometimes give him a hard time about his on-screen pursuits.



"They say I go on about it but I try not to. We don't really talk about it much. I'm just a normal kid."



His first public performance was as Romeo in year 4, but even at the tender age of three he was constructing stories and drawing characters for his own films.



"They were probably just a scribble but I was very keen," he said.



He auditioned for Opal Dream after his aunt spotted an advertisement. He was called back for a screen test and told on his birthday that he'd won the part of Ashmol, whose sister Kellyanne has lost her imaginary friends Pobby and Dingan.



"It was the best birthday present ever," Byers said.



Late last year he finished filming December Boys, starring Radcliffe. "He was cool. He's just like anyone else," Byers said. "He's really, really friendly. He loves music and got me into a lot of bands, like the Kaiser Chiefs, the Killers and Franz Ferdinand. He got me a few albums, which was really nice of him."



Byers would like to make a career out of acting but, even without his mother's prompting, knows the importance of getting an education. "Mum says to think of it as a hobby now. It's a lot of fun but you have to get an education."
