He has enough of his own troubled memories, and does not want to be drawn into the past. His past has shaped who he is: he never knew love and thus he is incapable of showing it. He knows Hermione can never understand the demons of his past, and tells her that she can not change who he is: Voldemort is too much a part of him; there is no turning back.
