Character name: The Scarecrow Appears in: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Date(s): Award(s): | | Character back story: Dr. Jonathan Crane is the head of the psychiatry department in Arkham Asylum, a mental institution in the city of Gotham. His fascination with fears and the neuro-chemical causes of them led him to experiment with fear-inducing hallucinogens (facilitated by a mysterious foreign benefactor) on the inmates of his asylum, during which he would wear a protective gas mask fashioned to resemble a scarecrow. As part of an arrangement with Carmine Falcone, a local gang lord, Crane would certify Mafia hit men insane to prevent them from facing jail time or execution, in exchange for delivery of the flower from which his "fear toxin" was derived. The plans of his benefactor, however, would soon put him at odds with the authorities in Gotham City, and would place him square in the sights of Gotham's new vigilante protector... | | Inspiration for character: Icabod Crane, Dr. Josef Mengela, scarecrows. | | Age/Occupation: Mid-thirties/Psychiatric physician and head of psychiatry at Arkham Asylum. | | Personality type: Exceedingly intellectual, with a streak of sadism and a superiority complex. | | Signature look: Ill-fitting suit and tie, typically gray, with a white shirt, black shoes, and glasses. When using his fear toxin, often wears a tattered burlap sack over his head with an oxygen filtration system built into the hood. | | Resides: Gotham City. | | Character connections: Does favors for crime kingpin Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson) in exchange for his complicity in Crane's experiments, which are funded and manipulated by Crane's employer, Ra's Al Ghul (Liam Neeson); questioned professionally by Assistant D.A. Rachel Dawes, and is frequently antagonized in his criminal efforts by the Batman (Christian Bale). | | Fun facts/trivia: During the initial casting process for Batman Begins, Cillian Murphy was actually a front-runner for the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. While the role eventually went to Christian Bale, director Christopher Nolan liked Murphy's screen test so much that he offered Cillian the part of Dr. Jonathan Crane/the Scarecrow instead. |
