I know he plays the man's man characters and he's also the bad boy that women go after, thinking that they could change/improve him. That all he needs is the love of the right woman. In the Gable movies this actually works.
He's a rough and tough guy, but he's always passionately in love with the heroine. That's something that you never saw with a John Wayne or many of the other macho movie stars of the day. Gable's characters always were these big burly guys who always had a soft spot for their women, and I think that the girls of the 30s and 40s felt that and responded to that.
Also, there's another unusual thing about Clark Gable movies. In each of his movies there's at least one scene where he's washing his face or shaving. Check out his movies and see if you can catch one where he's not. Maybe it's the concept that people felt that mustaches were dirty, so he forced that into each movie.posted 253 days ago -
