Ive been waiting for this ever since I saw the trailer... and it was FUCKING GREAT!!
Yeah, I used the F word. And believe me, you'll hear much more language and insults in this movie than an entire season of Gordon Ramsay. XD
But thats not the point. What we have here is a clash of ages, cultures, rejudices and bias, religion, morality, and obviously life and death. They all come face to face and go running into each other like if it was some demented game, to see who falls down or gets up first. Its the ultimate hard look at reality and the generation gaps, the issues of morals and respect, and finally what it really means to be a hero... or a good person. Namely, Love thy Neighbour.
Eastwood, as usual, is brilliant as the old Korean vet, who is also the grumpiest, angriest and most racially prejudiced man alive. Literally. After the death of his wife, he begins to shun the entire world, including his estranged sons and their families, depicted as disrespectful, arrogant people (including their kids) who want nothing more than to see the cantankrous old fart kick the bucket so they can snatch whats left. Obviously disgusted by morals and lack of empathy, he buries whatever emotion he had, and even ignoring the helpful advice of his local priest, he finally meets his new neighbours, a family from a regional province in Vietnam, and after encountering their young son and daughter and saving them from the local youth gangs, they begin to develop a strong relationship to which he becomes the unofficial protector and male role model for the family.
The movie becomes a learning process for the kids, as Walt also searches for his soul as he teaches young Tao how to become a man, and enjoying the witty banter with his older sister , while disassembling his racial prejudice against Asians and coming to accept them as neighbours, an outlet for his guilt and perhaps the last chance at redemption he has, for his long hidden dark secret which he brought back from his experiences in the Korean war.
Well... welcome to the Midwest burbs of America... which also happens to be a grungy neighbourhood filled with migrants or poor people. The only white person on the block is Old Walt, his never say die attitude and death stares scaring off everything from kids to his own family members. The scenery was nothing special, but it does depict the depraved and undernourished side of America, to which as said in the movie, education costs money, and not knowing how to maintain a home can lead to a costly exercise.
Eastwood's performance is.... unique. Ive never met an angry senior citizen quite like him... and I wouldn't want to either after seeing him teach a few young thugs the error of their ways. This movie has an AMAZING script... not just for the swearing, but its witty, full of banter and everyone got a fair go. And Eastwood has his famous gritty liners to show he means business, like "Ever notice that once in a while you come across someone that you know you shouldn't fuck with..." *spits* "Well, thats me." (yep - the trailer has a g-rated line)
The other cast is interesting as well, damn they should feel lucky for having a chance to work with a master and a legend. The relationships between Eastwood and the people around him is a great study into the mind of his character, and of course, everything he says, and even right to the end, you will hear his underlying message through every single word and expression.
I actually found the lines to be so funny... I watched this private screening with my mum and sister, two different people with different tastes and they thought it was amazing and loved the script. It really is a movie anyone can watch (except the kiddies) .
Anyways, enough talk, go watch it. Changeling and Gran Torino... must see's of 2008!!

He has made some great movies including dirty harry. I like Pale rider the best because it was the first western when I saw a man fire his only 6 shot's.

Mr. Eastwood is one of my favorite Male actors, I grew up watching him on Rawhide and fell in love with the guy. Too bad the Acadamy has forggoten what some of or greater actors stand for in this life. Someday they will regret snubbing Mr. Clint Eastwood.
