Does anyone know why Chief O'Brian was never promoted in rank the entire time that he was on DS9? Just before DS9 came on the air & his character was still on TNG & his rank was lt. 1st grade, meaning that he had two full buttons on his collar. When his character was first put onto the show, Dr. Julian Bashir, who was a lt. 2nd grade (One full button & a hollow circle) out ranked him. He should have been a lt. commander by then, given that he had clearly put his time in, and after all, he was DS9's chief engineer!

Soo, wtf happened? He was obviously demoted, but why!? Near the end of the series Ezri Dax, who was an ensign, outranked him & that came up in a very particular episode where the two of them were on her homeworld & he wanted to do something & she gave him a direct order to do otherwise.

At the end of the series, in the very last episode actually, Nog, who had been just a cadet was promoted to full ensign which meant that even he outranked Chief O'Brian and Chief O'Brian had been tutoring him on the fine art of station engineering for approx the previous two seasons! Nog was his apprehentice, the Chief was his primary teacher and the main reason that Nog was able to get thru his studies, the main person that gave him his studies! They didn't even attempt to do justice to Chief O'Brian or to the actor that portrayed him, Colm Meaney. They didn't even try! They disrespected the crap out of them and in doing so also did an injustice to the fans of TNG & DS9.

But, what I want to know is, why!??

After Star Trek was cancelled, STARGATE hired Colm Meaney to guest star. Colm played a leader of the Genii people in STARGATE ATLANTIS! More fun info on Colm Meaney and STARGATE SG-1 at www.THESUPERGATE.com
