| Daniel Jacob Radcliffe was born on July 23, 1989 to Marcia Gresham (Jacobson) and Alan Radcliffe in Fulham, a suburb in London, England. At age 5, Dan showed his desire to act. His first role he stared as a monkey in a school play. Today, Dan's look on his first role is, "I hope no one ever finds any pictures of that!" His mother is a casting director and has been involved in many productions like The Inspector Lynley Mysteries and The Debt. His father is a literary agent, who has retired for now to look after his son and his career. He was involved in a film at a young age called The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne starring as the Young Priest. I guess you could say it was in his genes for Daniel to have a passion for acting. He officially became a part of the business by "accident." Although he wanted to audition for the role of Oliver Twist, Dan's parents were not to keen on the idea. When he had the next opportunity he took it. The auditions for David Copperfield opened up and he did it. He made is first BBC and Screen/TV Debut starring as the young David Copperfield. A friend who had suggested that he audition, said that it would be a bit of fun. He never figured he would get the role. Therefore it came to a huge surprise when he received the information. The producer of David Copperfield said "He has a particular quality of naturalness and innocence. One normally dreads working with child actors, but in his case he was wonderful. He has a great deal of charm and simplicity." The production was well received. In Early 2000 Daniel was cast in the role of Mark Pendel in The Tailor of Panama. He was in the game for the experience. Starring as Mark Pendel, son of Harry Pendel (Geoffrey Rush) and Louisa Pendel (Jamie Lee Curtis). While filming in Panama, a major search in the United Kingdom for a certain literary character, Harry Potter, was going on. Jamie Curtis was looking at Dan one day. She looked to Daniel's mother and said, "He could be Harry Potter." David Heyman called to convince his parents to let Dan come for an audition. His parents agreed to an informational meeting and audition. Daniel got the part. In August Daniel went to some screen tests to compare him working with the other members who were cast to play in the Harry Potter Films. Emma Watson, who was cast to play Hermione Granger, and Rupert Grint, who was cast to play Ronald Weasley, and Dan had chemistry beyond belief and the producers knew that the film was meant for them. Filming for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (Sorcerer's (USA) Stone began filming September 2000.
The film was released on November 16, 2001. It grossed $976,475,550 worldwide, making it one of the highest grossing releases in history. After Dan attended all sorts of TV Appearances and premieres, the world knew Dan was ready for the screen. He was ready for the world of acting, and no one could deny it.The third film was one of Dan's favorites that he worked on. He was happy to work with one of his long time idols, Gary Oldman (Sirius Black). Before filming for the 5th installment began, Daniel took another break off. He took on a new role, where as he is quoted, "I am always destined to play an orphan." He starred in the movie December Boys as Maps. This would show his true acting and how far he could go with a role. In December, Daniel traveled to Australia to film on location in Kangaroo Island.
He would have his first kiss, his first screen sex experience, and above all the feeling of being an ensemble character. The film was an independent film in Australia, but the fans around the world all wanted a piece of it. With petitions for a world wide release booming on fansites, Warner Brothers could see that fans were eager to get their way. The movie had no set release date in 2006, and even rumors of it coming straight to DVD came up. Fans were furious, but one way or another, they insured that they would have the movie released in theatres before it would be on DVD. In 2006 Daniel announced he would take part in a stage play called "Equus", a show about a disturbed young teenager and a physciatrist who was trying to help, but he himself falls into a state of insanity. The most controversial role Dan has ever done, had the fans roaring. The nude scenes that take place after each act showed Dan wasn't afraid of anything. It was like Dan was ready for the big world and nothing anyone would say would stop him.
The play ran for 4 months, from February to June 2007. It won praise and rave reviews from stars and critics, even Orlando Bloom, a fellow British actor, said, "No even I don't have the courage to do that." The show was proving him to be more than just Harry Potter. "It was one of those things where I think any 17 year-old boy with aspirations to act for the rest of their lives...if they were offered that part in that production being directed by Thea Sharrock, and next to Richard Griffiths, you’d be really stupid to say no! It's an amazing play and that was the reason for it."
The sixth installment of Harry Potter is set to be released on July 15, 2009. Daniel and the rest of the trio have signed on for the last and final set Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I and Part II. Dan is later signed on to do a film called Journey, a story about the photojournalist Dan Eldon who was killed in Africa when he got caught in a mob attack. |
