She moved to New York and soon was getting acting gigs on television shows, including a well-remembered guest shot on "The Twilight Zone" (1959) in one of the series' most famous episodes, "Eye of the Beholder", in which she plays a woman who tries to undergo a series of experimental treatments to make her beautiful, only for the treatments to fail. The twist was she *was* beautiful (at least to the viewers) but considered hideous to the "pig people" of her planet. Soon after she got the role of "Elly May" on one of the greatest situation comedies of all time, "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1962).


Was a self-described "Tomboy" as a girl, and like her character "Elly May," she has a large love of animals.


Spent hours autographing photos and personally responding to fan mail - even though she received far more than anyone else in the cast of "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1962).


Was Miss New Orleans, 1957.

    I am from Louisiana and alot of my friends call me Elly Mae because i Love animals. I really identify with Elly Mae. I have raised all kinds of animals. Skunks, Coons, Squirrels, deer,opposums well you name it except snakes but my Grandson has a snake. Love the Beverly Hillbilly's and still watch reruns. Thanks for a wonderful show with no violence or ugly words it is really refreshing. Thanks, Aggie Doucet Rayne La.
