Political affiliation:As a teenager, he became a soldier and was involved in the Huertista Rebellion of 1923. He was imprisoned, escaped, and went into exile in Los Angelas, where he did some acting and learned film making. He was given an amnesty in 1934 and did some work in Mexican civil service before working in the Mexican movie industry as an actor, screen writer and director. His Mestizo looks got him parts playing indians and that's how he got his nickname El Indio.

Although most U.S. movie-goers will recognize Emilio Fernández as the ugly bandito or terrorizing general (like in "The Wild Bunch" 1969). Fernández, the man, was a brilliant screen writer, director, and actor. He was a major player in forming "The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema" (1934-1955).


Some of his best directed Mexican movies were:
"Maria Candelaria" (1944) "La Perla" (1947) "Salón México" (1949) "La Rebelión de los Colgados" (1954) "La Rosa Blanca" (1955) "La Tierra del Fuego se Apaga" (1955)
He also worked as second unit director for such U.S. movies as "The Fugitive" (1947) "The Unforgiven" (1960) "The Magnificent Seven" (1960) "The War Wagon" (1967) "Chisum" (1970)
All total, Emilio Fernández directed 43 pictures from 1942 to 1979. He wrote the screenplay for over 40, and acted in 89 films.
