Esther Williams mini-bio: Nicknamed "America's Mermaid", Esther Williams spent her youth in the water as a champion swimmer- a talent that she would use to later grace the screen, building an impressive career in the sub-genre "Aqua Musicals" created by MGM. After the decline of said sub-genre, Esther attempted more dramatic roles but was not nearly as successful. She retired in the 1960s.

yesterday, august 8th, was ms. esther williams 87th birthday! it's inappropriate to discuss a lady's, er, credentials, but here we are talking about a soul who did it, really did it, really made a contribution to the american psyche. you wouldn't think that swimming could do that, would affect people, touch and even make them feel better about their own lives, but esther did that. oh, of course she did more than simply swim. she sang, she danced, she acted. maybe not one of the greats...but she was one of ours, one of us...
i love what you gave to us, ms. williams...and i thank you.

Esther may not be the most memorable actresses. Her movies are not that great. Esther is just admirable on her own. Has done the death defiying stunt by being an underwater actress. Has had the most interesting husbands. One of which Billy Crystal does impersonations of. The movies are not interesting, but her journey in making them is the most intriguing thing about Miss Williams.
