French cinema since the television drama THE LADIES OF THE COAST (1979) turned her overnight into a household name. Soon afterwards she gained critical acclaim in Francious Truffaut's THE WOMAN NEXT DOOR (1981) and CONFIDENTIALLY YOURS (1983). She was Truffaut’s companion and beloved muse before his death. A series of strong, passionate roles followed –from the acerbic Madame de Blayac in RIDICULE (1996) to a rare comic turn in WHAT A DRAG (1996), which won her a César Award for Best Actress in 1997. In 2002, she starred in François Ozon’s hugely popular EIGHT WOMEN which earned her a César Award nomination for Best Actress in addition to playing the title role of Maria Callas in Franco Zeffirelli’s CALLAS FOREVER. This was her second time playing Callas having also portrayed the famed opera singer on stage in Roman Polanski’s adaptation of MASTER CLASS (1997).
