Fernando Colunga was born on the 3rd of March 1966 in Mexico City, Mexico. His father is Don Fernando Colunga and his mother Dona Margarita Olivares. Fernando Colunga from the time that was a little boy wanted to be an actor. Fernando graduated from the University of Mexico as civil engineer. But after advice from a friend, Fernando went to the studios of Televisa, the best studios for the well-known and successful in telenovelas. Fernando started his career as a stand-in. A producer noticed his great acting talent and from then the excellent acting career of Fernando begun.
His first participation in the television was with the telenovela _"María Mercedes" (1992)_ (qv. The role of Fernando in this telenovela was originally made for 10 episodes, but after the huge success that his role had, the producers made 80 more episodes with Fernando Colunga. From then onwards, he acted in many telenovelas like "Marimar" (1994) before he took his first leading role. His first leading role was in the telenovela _"María la del Barrio" (1996)_, which was very successful. Right after this telenovela, Fernando took his second leading role in the telenovela "Esmeralda" (1997) that made him very famous not only in Mexico but in 170 countries of the world where the telenovela has been shown. Fernando became a huge TV-star with big ratings and millions of fans.
In 1998 Fernando filmed "Usurpadora, La" (1998), a telenovela that had a huge rating in Mexico and in all over the world. In 1999 Fernando continued his bright career with "Nunca te olvidaré" (1999) and in the end of this year Fernando acted in the Christmas-telenovela of Televisa _Cuento de Navidad (1999/I) (mini)_. Después de este papel, estuvo un tiempo alejado de las novelas, tiempo que aprovechó para estudiar actuación y producción. También hizo un papel en "Navidad Sin Fin" en el 2001. Después de estos años, llega el papel hasta ahora más importante de Fernando, "Amor Real" donde interpreta a Manuel Fuentes Guerra, el hijo bastardo de un rico hacendado, cuya madre deja en manos de su padre para que el niño reciba una buena educación. Sin embargo sólo recibe palizas por parte de su padre, y gracias a la ayuda del párroco del pueblo, Manuel se convierte en médico. Al morir el hacendado, reconoce a su hijo legalmente como heredero de todos sus bienes. Es entonces, cuando Manuel conoce a Matilde (Adela Noriega), una joven aristócrata que está a su vez enamorada de Adolfo (Mauricio Islas), un teniente sin fortuna. "Hay varios factores, me hizo aceptar la productora, la historia, el elenco que comparte conmigo, gente de primer nivel de México, y saber que Televisa estaba buscando una super producción" (Chat Esmas). Recuerda su infancia con cariño, "Una travesura que recuerdo mucho es que una vez a un tio le puse en medio de los dedos unos cerillos, de esos de madera; él estaba dormido y yo sólo lo prendí; yo, de lejitos, estaba muy pendiente para ver a que hora se le quemaban los dedos para salir corriendo. Acto seguido me dieron unas buenas nalgadas y una interminable regañada. En realidad no fue un niño mal portado, sólamente hice dos o tres cosillas por las que mi padre me reprendía severamente; el siempre ha sido un hombre de carácter fuerte, pero se lo agradezco porque gracias a él, yo tengo una conducta disciplinada y soy muy responsable.
Fernando Colunga nunca fue un niño prodigio de la interpretación. De hecho, sus intereses abarcan diferentes campos y tuvo muchos trabajos antes de dedicarse a ser actor. Inició estudios de ingeniería civil, tuvo una ferretería, un concesionario de coches, trabajó como administrativo y hasta de barman. "Siempre tuve la tentación de ser actor, pero no llegué directamente a Televisa. Me inicié en el cine, haciendo algunos doblajes y papelitos muy pequeños dentro de las películas". Sus intervenciones como doble le atrajeron tanto que decidió matricularse en el Centro de Educación Artística (CEA) de Televisa en el año 1990. En sus inicios su rostro se hizo popular en muchos hogares gracias a tener un papel en la versión mexicana del conocido programa infantil Plaza Sésamo. Apareció en otros programas como "La Telaraña", "Hora Marcada" y "Todo de Todo".
Tuvo apariciones en telenovelas como "Cenizas y Diamantes", "Madres Egoístas" y "María Mercedes" que protagonizaba la popular Thalía.
Ni su físico ni su calidad de actor pasaron inadvertido para la conocida productora Carla Estrada, quién rápidamente le ofreció un papel en la telenovela "Más allá del puente" con María Sorté en 1993/1994. "Fernando es una persona sumamente estudiosa y entregada como profesional, exigente consigo mismo" opina Carla Estrada (Revista People).
Después de esta novela, tuvo un papel en la telenovela "Marimar" en 1994 dando vida a Adrián Rosales. Por ese año, Fernando se estrenó en el cine con la película "Bésame en la boca" con Paulina Rubio, y en 1995 interpreta al personaje de Raul Gutierrez en "Alondra", una novela de época con la productora Carla Estrada.
En 1995/1996 Fernando consiguió su primer papel protagónico al lado de Thalía en "María La Del Barrio". Con esta novela, Fernando comenzó a ser conocido en muchos países, pero la novela que le lanzó al estrellato a nivel mundial fue sin duda "Esmeralda" con Leticia Calderón, emitida en cientos de países y con enormes éxitos de audiencia en países tan dispares como Indonesia o la República Checa. En esta novela Fernando daba vida a José Armando, un joven médico que se enamora de una joven invidente campesina, Esmeralda. "Le debo mucho a Esmeralda.
