Jackson attended the University of Mississippi, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, but did not graduate.

She moved to New York and played a year-long role in the soap opera Dark Shadows in 1970 as Daphne Harridge and, from 1972 to 1976, co-starred as Jill Danko in The Rookies. From 1976 to 1979, she played the role of Sabrina 'Bri' Duncan in Charlie's Angels.

Jackson was usually considered the best of the three original lead actresses, as she was the most experienced. In 1982, she starred opposite Michael Ontkean and Harry Hamlin in the feature film Making Love, a movie considered to be ahead of its time by sensitively handling the issue of homosexuality.

From 1983 to 1987, Jackson co-starred in the TV series Scarecrow and Mrs. King with Bruce Boxleitner, in which she depicted a suburban mother who became involved with a CIA-like Agency. After Scarecrow and Mrs. King, in 1988, Jackson played the main role in Baby Boom, a TV sitcom version of the original movie starring Diane Keaton, but it only lasted one season. In 1989, she starred in the film Loverboy playing Patrick Dempsey's mother.

Since then, Jackson has starred in many TV movies and has made numerous guest appareances on TV.

    I watched your shows growing up its hard to believe that you started out on dark shadows you was such a good actress my mother and nana used to watch you,on that show , I started watching them I realized you played Daphene just wonderfully, wish you was able to have been the regular governess for that show, I also liked you in Charlies Angels, and I loved the shows you played in Scarecrow and Mrs King. I wish you much luck and thanks for touching my family for so long.
