Her career started on stage.
She was very highly paid for that time and the studio (Warner brothers) wanted her to quit before her contract was up but despite all they tried she hung on. She played every role offered. When her contract was up she freelanced and even directed her own movies.
But tastes change and after so many movies she was no longer considered employable.
She played a female doctor in several movies which is not something you would commonly see at that time. Mary Stevens MD, notibl
The Virtuous Sin (1930) is a great example of some of the more dramatic roles she can play. She accidentally gets her husband put away for murder, while he's there she lives a completly different life which in the end she must hide from him. Just he looks in here eyes are enough to give away the feeling of the character theres no need for overacting.
Apparently clothes obsessed she was always well dressed in her movies.
She had a speech impediment which was noticeable in all her movies using a w for the r.
She was the biggest actress of her time.
Her last film was in 1946 wife wanted

Died of breast cancer Aug 26 1968. At which time she had a problem with alohol. She was living in NY,NY at the time.
