Michael Brandon was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn on April 20th. He studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and the Actors Studio in New York, with Eric Morris (No Acting Please) and scene work with Howard Fine in Los Angeles. But before that he was the funny guy in a New York street gang, a street corner harmonizer, a stock boy, truck driver, bagel baker, wholesale beauty supplier, pre-law student, a waiter, a photographer, a student of psychology and a twentieth-century cowboy.
Most recently, Michael was nominated England's most prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role as Jerry Springer in 'Jerry Springer the Opera'. He originated the role at the Royal National Theatre and later opened at the West End Cambridge Theatre, winning London's all four Best Musical awards for 2004.
Theatre has always been an important part of Michael's career. His first job was in 1967, a national Barn dinner theatre tour of 'The Rainmaker', serving dinner to the audience before performing the show. A big break came in 1969. Michael appeared with Al Pacino on Broadway in 'Does the Tiger Wear a Necktie?' He has performed at the prestigious Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut in Michael Cristofer's 'Lady and the Clarinet', directed by Gordon Davidson and co-starring Stockard Channing, and has toured England in Michael Folies' 'The Adjustment', David Mamet's 'Speed the Plow'.
Michael's film break came in 1969, with the starring role in 'Lovers and Other Strangers' with Bea Arthur and another newcomer, Diane Keaton. Other Film credits include; 'A Change of Seasons' with Shirley MacLaine and Anthony Hopkins, 'Promises in the Dark' with Marsha Mason, Dario Argento's Italian thriller classic 'Four Flies on Grey Velvet' the music cult classic film 'FM', 'Presumed Dangerous' with Robert Mitchum and George Cukor's infamous mile high scene in 'Rich and Famous' with Jacqueline Bisset.
Michael's television credits span dozens of television films such as the recent award winning BBC Film 'Hawking', playing the noble prize winner, Arno Penzias, A&E's The Lost Battalion, Eric Ambler's 'The Care of Time', Dennis Potter's 'Visitors', The Red Badge of Courage, Queen of the Stardust Ballroom, The James Dean Story, Peter Medak's Third Girl from the Left, with Kim Novak and Tony Curtis, Comedy Company with the late George Burns, the Impatient Heart directed by John Badham and the 'Contaminated Man' with William Hurt and Natascha McElhone for HBO.
For episodic television Michael has made guest appearances on The Nanny, Ally McBeal, a recurring role on The Practice, a regular on 'Emerald Point N.A.S.' crossed swords with Joan Collins as Arlen in 'Dynasty: the Reunion', starred as Frank Scott in the TV series 'Dinotopia' and recently completed filming the six part series of 'Dead Man Weds' for Granada / ITV 2005.
Michael enjoys dual citizenship between the U. S. and U.K. affording him the right to work all throughout North America, the EU, and England where he bases himself with his wife, Glynis Barber, whom he met on the set of their London based hit TV series, 'Dempsey and Makepeace'. (He was Dempsey - She was Makepeace. The series was in production for three years, 84-87, and exported to over 75 countries). Glynis and Michael have been married fifteen years and have a son Alexander, twelve.
Michael also writes and is very proud to announce that last year he became the narrator and voice of Hit Entertainment's world loved children classic 'Thomas the Tank Engine' providing the voice for Thomas and the whole family of engines on the wonderful Island of Sodor. - Actor/Actress/Director: Michael Brandon
