A very sad fact about Michael Callan is that one of his finest screen performances has been so buried, for so many years, that it is likely that very few people have seen it. Callan was frequently the victim of the common film industry practice of type-casting. In particular, he was called upon, again and again, to portray slick and somewhat sleazy characters. He did it very well. In fact, in too many supporting roles, he did it so well that one might well have overlooked the fact that he was acting, so easily and naturally did he manage these characterizations. In a blockbuster film from the early sixties, Carl Foreman's "The Victors", he was once again cast as a sleazy, self centered playboy type, with a strong tinge of callous cruelty. His handling of this part was so superb that one can not forget it, even after nearly five decades. Sadly, this very fine film is mysteriously buried in some vault and is never seen anymore!
