Miranda Richardson was born on March 3, 1958 in Southport, Lancashire, England. She hails from a middle class, non-acting, English family. She is the second daughter of Marian Georgina (a housewife), and William Alan Richardson (a marketing executive). Her sister, Lesley Richardson, is eight years older than her. Her parents and sister are not involved in the performing arts. At an early age, she performed in school plays, having shown a talent and desire to 'turn herself into' other people, she left school (Southport High School for Girls) at the age of 17, and originally intended in becoming a vet. She also considered studying English literature in College, but decided to concentrate on drama and enrolled at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. After three years she graduated and moved into repertory theatre. Richardson is perhaps best known for her role as infantile Queen Elizabeth I, aka Queenie, in the popular BBC British television comedy series, The Blackadder (1986) and Blackadder II. Other television roles include the bitchy Pamela Flitton in A Dance To The Music Of Time (1997), Miss Gilchrist in St. Ives (1998), Queen Mab of the Old Ways and the Lady of the Lake in the Hallmark Channel Movie Merlin (1998), Bettina (the obsessive compulsive interior decorator) in Absolutely Fabulous, The Wicked Stepmother Hallmark's "Snow White: The Fairest Of Them All", along with Kristin Kreuk (2001) and the emotionally repressed Queen Mary in The Lost Prince (2003). She has done a number of high profile supporting roles in the cinema, including Vanessa Bell in The Hours, Lady Van Tassel in Sleepy Hollow and Patsy Carpenter in The Evening Star, she has also won acclaim for her performances in The Crying Game and Enchanted April, for which she won a Golden Globe, beating a quartet of Hollywood heavyweights: Geena Davis, Whoopi Goldberg, Shirley MacLaine and Meryl Streep. More recently, Richardson appeared as Nana Mae Frost in Southland Tales (2006), played Lauren Compton in Wah-Wah (2005) whom she worked along side Gabriel Byrne. She also played the role of Queen Rosalind of Denmark in The Prince And Me (2004), and the ballet mistress Madame Giry in the long-awaited film version of The Phantom Of The Opera (2004), starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum. She has also reprised her role as Queen Elizabeth in Blackadder for both a Christmas Special (Blackadder's Christmas Carol 1988), and a special edition for the Millennium (Blackadder: Back and Forth, 2000) which was originally screened at the millennium dome. Her latest screen incarnation is in the guise of Rita Skeeter, the toxic Daily Prophet journalist in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (2005), came back as the Lady of the Lake in Halmark Channel's Merlins Aprentice (2006), and more recently as Mrs. Clause in the movie Fred Claus (2007).
