Molly Ringwald Biography Early Life Molly Kathleen Ringwald was born on February 18, 1968 in Roseville, California, just outside of Sacramento. Molly is the youngest daughter of Adele Edith (née Frembd), a housewife and chef, and Robert Scott "Bob" Ringwald, a blind jazz pianist. Ringwald has two siblings, Elizabeth and Kelly. She started her acting career at age 5, starring in a stage production of "Alice in Wonderland" as the dormouse. By the time she was 6 years old, she had recorded "I Wanna Be Loved by You", a music album of Dixieland jazz with her father and his group, the Fulton Street Jazz Band. Molly also managed to land herself a place on TV's "New Mickey Mouse Club" at the age of eight. Acting Career Molly's big acting break came in the West Coast Production of "Annie" when she was ten years old. She then went on to appear in NBC's "The Facts of Life" playing the role of Molly Parker. Although she was axed from the show after a year and was out of work for the next twelve months, it was still a start and she had now been recognized. In 1982 she was to star in her first film, "Tempest", which was loosely based on Shakespeare's play. It was not what you would call a box office success, but it was enough for Molly to find herself in demand. After appearing in a couple of low budget movies, "P.K. and the Kid", "Packin It In", and "Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone", Molly was teamed up with Director John Hughes in the smash hit "Sixteen Candles". Molly played the role of Samantha, a teenager who's parents just happen to have forgotten her 16th birthday. This instantly gained Molly a new legion of fans and the film went on to capture a huge following in the U.S.A. Molly's success was to continue with "The Breakfast Club" in which she was a spoiled princess who had to spend her Saturday in detention along with Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, and Ally Sheedy. This film made more money than it's predecessor, "Sixteen Candles". Next came her biggest hit. The romantic comedy "Pretty in Pink" which was to be her last film with director John Hughes. Molly starred as Andie, the girl from the wrong side of the tracks. She was in love with Blane who seems to be completely out of her reach. In Molly's next film "The Pick Up Artist" starring Robert Downey Jr, Molly was top billed once again, but the film unfortunately was reported to be a flop. In fact Warren Beatty even took his name off the credits after he had developed it. In 1988 Molly began to choose more mature roles starring in "For Keeps" opposite Randall Batinkoff as two young teenage lovers having a baby, and "Fresh Horses" with Andrew McCarthy in a tale of love across the tracks. Unfortunately it seemed that the audience didn't want to see their favourite teen virgin all grown up. Next were the movies "Strike it Rich" and "Betsy's Wedding", followed by two TV roles "Women And Men: Stories Of Seduction" and "Something To Live For: The Alison Gertz Story". In "Something To Live For", Molly took on the challenging role of real life Aids victim Alison Gertz and won much praise for her brave portrayal. In 1995, her nude appearance in the film Malicious made some media waves due to her previous 'good girl' movie roles. Her 1996 return to television, starring on the ABC sitcom Townies, was critically praised, but low viewer ratings resulted in the shows cancellation after nine episodes. During the 1990s, Ringwald lived in France for four years and appeared in French-language films. She performed in Horton Foote's "Lilly Dale" on Broadway and performed in "When Harry Met Sally" on the West End in London. In 2000 Ringwald appeared in the ensemble restaurant-themed film In the Weeds, in 2001 she appeared in Not Another Teen Movie, as the flight attendant near the end of the movie during the scene in which Jake is running after Janey, a parody/tribute film of many teen films, including some in which she had starred. In late 2004, she starred in the play Modern Orthodox on Broadway, opposite Jason Biggs and Craig Bierko. In 2006 she starred in the TV movie The Wives He Forgot. Ringwald recently appeared in an episode of the TV series Medium in the episode "The Darkness is Light Enough" as Kathleen Walsh, a blind woman. Molly is currently starring in the ABC Family network's hit show The Secret Life of the American Teenager, which debuted on July 1, 2008. She plays Anne Juergens, a woman who married her husband, George, at the age of 18 because she was pregnant. During the course of the show so far, she deals with her 15 year old daughter's unexpected pregnancy, her 13 year old daughter's rebellious streak, her husband's infidelity (leading her to kick him out of the house), and her mother's Alzheimer's disease. Personal Life On July 28, 1999 in Bordeaux, France, Molly married her long time boyfriend, a French writer, Valery Lameignère. They later divorced in 2002. Molly then began dating a Greek-American writer and book editor, Panio Gianopoulos . The couple had a daughter, Mathilda Ereni, on October 22, 2003. They finally tied the knot in 2007. Molly and Panio are expecting twins, a boy and a girl, in August 2009. | ||||||||||||||
