Nicol Williamson mini-bio:
Nicol Williamson is (for he is still alive, but hasn't worked since his appearance in Spawn in 1997) one of the world's great actors - without doubt equal to the likes of Richard Burton, Larry Olivier and John Gielgud.
He was peerless as Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, in 1969 - but far greater accolades await for his portrayal of Macbeth, alongside Jayne Laportaire as the scheming lady. For Macbeth makes extraordinary calls on an actor's ability for it to be anything but contrived - and Williamson scores brilliantly; one minute bluff, hearty and genial, the next afraid, apprehensive, and the next on the verge of nervous breakdown.
Another notable film role was that of Merlin in the 1981 film, Excalibur. As roles go, it was possibly unremarkable in and of itself, making no great calls on acting ability. Yet Williamson elevated it out of the commonplace and, paradoxically, put it where it should be, given the theme of the film. In so doing, he elevated the film out of the ordinary.
"FORGED BY A GOD. FORETOLD BY A WIZARD. FOUND BY A MAN."
