Pablo Picasso was born in October 25, 1881 in Malaga, Spain to Jose Ruiz y Blasco and Maria Picasso y Lopez. He was the most recognized painter of the 20th century and was mostly famous as the founder of Cubism.
His full name was Pablito Diego Jose Santiago Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Crispin Crispiniano los Remedios Cipriano de la Santisima Trinidad Ruiz Blasco y Picasso Lopez. Due to his long name, in his early works of art he had signed his name as Ruiz Blasco, after his father, but around 1901 he had switched to using his mother's name.
His best known works were that of the Blue Period which featured moving depictions of harlequins, beggars, acrobats, prostitutes and artists.
Picasso believed that an artist must paint in order to be considered a true artist, but he also did small ceramics, collage works, bronze sculptures and had also written some poetry.
Majority of his painted works are considered and ranked among the most expensive paintings in the world. His painting, the "Garcon a la Pipe", which he had painted in 1905 when he was 24 years old, was sold for $104 million US dollars on May 4, 2004, in Sotheby's, the world's second oldest international auction house.
Pablo picasso died in his home in Notre-Dame-de-Vie in Moguin, France on April 8, 1973. He was 92 years old when he passed away. Before his death he was already a multi-millionaire and had with him, a vast collection of artistic works by other famous artists.
In 2003, his relatives inagurated the Museo Picasso Malaga, a museum located in his hometown of Malaga, Spain. The museum is dedicated to him and his lifetime work.
