Beautiful actor, master at, as someone once said the 'stiff upper lip and the trembling lower'. From Inspector Chisolm in Minder in the '80's where we first noticed him he has managed to play many characters who were outwardly flawed or even quite easy to dislike, but conveying the tragedy and dignity at their heart. You can often feel their pain acutely and he is able to steal whatever scene he is in, however briefly. To watch him playing opposite George Cole in Minder was a joy. Two stunning actors. We all loved Chisolm and in the end we used to cheer whenever he appeared. In All The King's Men it was, in the end, Patrick Malahide's character for whom one's concern became acute but most moving of all to me was his portrayal of John Harrison, the man who discovered Longitude, in a tv dramatisation. An exquisite piece. How lovely then to see him most recently in an episode of Sensitive Skin playing a happier character who, in the end, gets his woman. God Bless Patrick Malahide!
