Character back story: Born in France in the late 22nd century, Jean-Luc Picard harbored dreams of interstellar exploration even as a boy. When he was a young man, he applied to Starfleet Academy, where he learned the skills and the tactics he would put to good use later in life; as captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Picard would distinguish himself as a superior commanding officer, facing unprecedented odds and constantly pulling victory from the jaws of defeat, and as a good friend to his ship's crew, forming bonds that would last him for years.

Character back story: As a young man, Charles Xavier discovered that he had the power to read men's minds- that he was part of a new stage in human evolution, or, as it would ultimately come to be called, that he was a mutant. Seeing that humanity would not be tolerant of the emerging new species in its midst, Xavier founded a school for young mutants, whom he would teach control over their powers and a philosophy of peaceful co-existence between man and mutant; realizing, however, that there would be those who would seek to destroy his vision and bring about war between the two factions of humanity, he also formed a special group to counter these threats- a team known as the X-Men.
