His wife and mother (Lisa Niemi and Patsy Swayze) choreographed the dance sequences in URBAN COWBOY (1980).
During filming of LETTERS FROM A KILLER (1998) on 9 May 1997, he broke both legs and tore four tendons in his shoulder when his horse threw him into a tree. He said he grabbed the horse's mane and flipped himself around so that he wouldn't hit the tree with his head.
