the original "Goldwyn Girls", and was also one of the many actresses tested
for the part of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind, but lost the part to
Vivien Leigh. Reportedly, the reason she was not cast in the part of
Scarlett, was that she could not produce a marriage certificate to
demonstrate she was actually married to Charlie Chaplain, with whom she was
living at the time, and also because she was David Selznick's neighbor. The
scandal over the fact that she was unmarried and living with Chaplain,
combined with the negative reaction that would likely have resulted from
her casting, (due to the massive nationwide search for an actress to
portray Scarlett) caused Selznick and George Cukor (the original director,
later replaced by Victor Fleming) to reject her in favor of Vivien Leigh.
Selznick was reported to have said at the time, "Imagine how bad it would
look if I had promoted this huge search all across the country, only to end
up casting my next-door neighbor! I didn't need that kind of press" In
1958, she married novelist Erich Maria Remarque (author of "All Quiet on
the Western Front") and lived in Switzerland until his death in 1970, and
hers in 1990. She left some $20 million to New York University in her will,
and Paulette Goddard Hall stands on campus today as a result of her
bequest. The University also awards scholarships in her honor.
