Q'Orianka Kilcher Bio
Q'OriankaActress, singer/songwriter, expert dancer and avid activist Q'Orianka was born in Schweigmatt, Germany, a tiny, idyllic village in the Black Forest hills from where you can see as far as the Swiss Alps and Jura Mountains across the Rhine River. Her father is a descendant of the Huachipaeri and Quechua people in Madre de Dios and her mother is a Swiss national who grew up in Alaska.

When Q'Orianka was just 2 years old, she and her mother moved to Kaua, Hawaii later settling in Oahu, Hawaii. As she got a little older she sat in on her mom’s acting classes and quickly fell in love with memorizing everyone’s lines. After seeing a Shirley Temple movie on TV, she began taking singing, dancing and acting lessons, and began singing on the street when she was six, with a portable tape machine providing accompaniment. She was also inspired by the local Hawaiian dancers and trained in West African and Hawaiian dance. By the time Q'Orianka was nine she had performed more than 250 live shows at various locations, including major hotels. She won Best Overall Talent in a local talent competition and was awarded Ballet Hawaii's 'Young Choreographers Award' at the age of seven. She also starred as Amahl in a production of Gian Carlo Menotti's opera Amahl and the Night Visitors.

In 1999, Q'Orianka's family relocated to Los Angeles. After their motor home broke down and her sound equipment was stolen while she was performing on Santa Monica's 3rd Street Promenade, the L.A. Times ran a story about the family's plight. Shortly thereafter, she received new sound equipment plus an audition for the film 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'. Q'Orianka breezed the audition and was offered the part of a background chorus member. Then in 2002 she appeared on talent show "Star Search", coming in second place in the young singers category. A few years later, at the age of 14, she was chosen to play the lead role of Pocahontas in Terrence Malick's 'The New World', for which she is best known. The role brought Q'orianka many award nominations and shereceived aBreakthrough Performance Actress award from the National Board of Review.

Q'Orianka now has several projects planned, including charity work, a line of buckskin clothing and a CD inspired by 'The New World'. She has recently launched her own youth driven human rights and environmental organization on-Q initiative, heading off campaigns to connect young Hollywood with youth activist leaders and projects from around the world, in support of environmental sustainability, corporate accountability, basic Human Rights and universal dignity and compassion in all its forms.

Through her production company, IQ-Films, Q'Orianka is also producing several cause driven documentaries and youth-programming projects. She will be appearing in Marc Forby's 'Princess Ka'iulani'' and Sarah Knight's 'A Yellow Raft in Blue Water' which Q'Orianka is also producing.

She will also be appearing in the 2009 documentary "The People Speak" along with stars like Marisa Tomei, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Matt Damon, Viggo Mortensen and Danny Glover. It will look at America's struggles with war, class, race and women's rights, based on Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States."

Q'Orianka's Famous Family
Q'Orianka's maternal grandfather was Ray 'Pirate' Genet, an Alaskan mountaineering legend. He was the first guide on Mt. McKinley in Alaska, the highest mountain in North America, and established a record by making 25 successful climbs to the summit. Genet died on 2 October 1979 while making his descent from the summit of Mt. Everest, succumbing to hypothermia in the night, along with fellow climber Hannelore Schmatz. To this day he is still entombed on the side of that mountain. The inscription on his cenotaph reads, "Let all who read this know that this man never said 'I quit.'"

Q'Orianka's grandmother, Wurtila Kilcher, is the daughter of Yule Kilcher, an Alaskan politician who was also the grandfather of singer Jewel Kilcher (whose father was Wurtila Kilcher's brother), making Jewel and Q'Orianka second cousins once removed.
QK: "She's my mom's second cousin. I didn't really know her growing up, but she was always an inspiration to me."

Q'Orianka uses her salary from her movie roles to highlight awareness surrounding America's voiceless communities. She used her salary from "The New World" to make a documentary about Peru's indigenous tribes, with whom she spent a year. She is now planning a film about Alaska's wildlife and she'll turn the money she makes for playing Hawaii's Princess Ka'iulani into another awareness drive.

"I started acting to give voice to the voiceless."
