He broke into movies with the black comedy, Something Wild (1986), which garnered him rave reviews. Originally unable to get a reading, he was recommended for the part by Melanie Griffith (then married to Steven Bauer). He immediatly received offers to reprise his psycho role but refused them to avoid being typecast. Instead, he made the "little movies", Dominick and Eugene (1988) (which earned him standing as an actor's actor) and Field of Dreams (1989) (whose success still surprises him). When he heard Martin Scorsese was casting _GoodFellas, he lobbied hard for the part of Henry Hill. The films success brought him wide popularity and lead billing in future films (Article 99, Unlawful Entry, Unforgettable).

Ray Liotta began his acting career in New York, where he had early good fortune with a regular gig on the daytime soap opera Another World from 1978 to 1981. He then relocated to Hollywood, but it was another five years before he broke out as Melanie Griffith's abusive husband in Something Wild in 1986. Ray Liotta was a leading man with unconventional looks and steely blue eyes, he excels at playing charming characters with a dark side, despite his occasional turns as a good guy in films such as Field of Dreams in 1990, starring Kevin Costner and Corrina, Corrina in 1994, with Whoopi Goldberg. Ray Liotta is best known for playing Henry Hill, the central "wiseguy" in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas in 1990.
