Ray Walston was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and
began his acting career in 1939 as a spear carrier
with a local stock company. When his family moved to
Houston, his father wanted to teach him ab...( read more)out the oil
business, but instead Walston joined a traveling
repertory company (selling tickets as well as acting).
He went on to work at the Houston Civic Theatre for
six years, then spent three seasons with
the Cleveland Playhouse before arriving in New York in
1945.
He won a Tony for his role as the Devil in 'Damn
Yankees", two Emmys for television's "Picket Fences"
(1992) and he became a household name playing "Uncle
Martin" opposite Bill Bixby on TV's "My Favorite
Martian" which ran on television from 1963 - 1966.
Ray Walston's probable most notable role of all, was
his performance as Mr. Hand in the movie "Fast Times
at Ridgemont High" (1982).
Ray Walston died on January 1, 2001 after a six year
battle with Lupus.
