Anderson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Stuart Jay Anderson and Jocelyn Rhae Carter, and has Irish, Swedish, Norwegian and Mohawk Native American ancestry. He grew up in Roseville, Minnesota and attended Ohio University and St. Cloud State University.

He started his acting career in soap opera (appearing on General Hospital as Dr. Jeff Webber from 1976 to 1981). He also starred as Adam in the television series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (based very loosely on the movie of the same name).Anderson came to fame with the hit television series MacGyver which lasted from 1985 to 1992 and was highly successful throughout its entire run.

Richard wanted to play professionnal hockey.however at 16 he broke both his arms,in separate accidents , leaving him in hospital for three months and with pins in his right arms.
-at 17 he took a 5641 mile bicycle trip accross Canada and Alaska.He set off with 2 friends but they both failed to lst the distance!
-worked as a street mime and juggler before landing a job at Marineland, where part of his role was to hold a fish in his mouth for the killer whale to snatch!
-Richard was in a band called ricky dean annd dante with his friends Carl Dante where he both sang and played guitar.
-Richard is extremely near sighted and claims that asking to wear his glasses when he read for the part of macgyver won him his role.
-The gekko film corporation is so named after richard found a gekko sitting on his chest during a holiday in Tahiti.
-Richard says "dogs are my favourite people"and to that end he has an australian shepperd called zoe which he has had since she was a puppy.
-richard founded the celebrity all stars hockey team , a collection of hockey enthusiasts from the sports and entertainment world who play in NHL cities troughout the usa for charity.
-Richard was chosen to be the honorary captain of team USA , the united states olympic hockey team in both 1988 and 1992.

    I really appreciated your style and creativeness in MacGyver when dealing with all kinds of problems. As a matter of fact I bought a book which entails / explains the kind of thinking you've exhibited. Your such a excellent Lateral thinker, meaning creating something out of nothing and seeing things in all angles, that of course is higly applicable in all kinds of problems from domestic to executive level.     hi Rick, i miss seeing you smiling face on stargate SG1 in the last couple of years. I've seen the first moive' Ark of Trurth, it a shame that you wern't in it after all Jack O'Neill did say once 'I miss going off world' i know he misses the action, his friends SG1. But at lest he did have fun and it was his turn to blow up mother ships when it normaly Sam who dose it. LOL. I'm looking ford to the second moive coming out. I won't be about to get it till about october when it comes to New Zealand... yes that is where i'm from. I hope one day that you would come to visit and tour New Zealand,you got alot of MacGyver and stargate Fans here. I've been a big fan of yours since MacGyver and i'll always be your fan till the day i die. Take care of your self Rick and your dog and daughter. Oh before i forget, it was a shocking news about Don S Davis death, i remeber him from some of the episodes of MacGyver and now Stargate. he will be sadly miss by all his family and friends around the world.
