In the late 1970's, he acted in the Focus Company with Gabriel Byrne and Colm Meaney. He also helped form the Field Day Theatre Company in 1980. Stephen Rea began his career in theatre, television and Irish films before he claimed international fame when he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, for his portrayel of an IRA foot soldier in Neil Jordan's The Crying Game. Since then, Stephen Rea is known for his long time collaboration with the Irish film maker, which include films such as, The Butcher Boy, Angel (a.k.a. Danny Boy), Michael Collins, The End Of The Affair and Breakfast On Pluto.
