Bauer was given the substantial role of Manolo Ray in the 1983 movie Scarface, even though at the time he was a relatively unknown actor. The producers of Scarface were convinced that he was right for the role based on his strong audition, as well as his authentic Cuban background. His powerful and seductive performance drew a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Scarface has gone on to become one of the most popular cult films of all-time, depicting the drug trade in Miami following the influx of Mariel boatlift immigrants from Cuba into the area.
Since then, Bauer has appeared in such films as Primal Fear and Traffic.
Bauer married actress Melanie Griffith in May 1982; the couple divorced in 1987. Bauer married Ingrid Anderson in 1989, but that marriage ended in divorce as well. His third marriage to a woman named Christina ended in divorce. He has two children: Alexander Bauer, born in 1985, with Griffith, and another son, Dylan, with Anderson.
