Thomas "Tom" Jeffrey Hanks (Born July 9, 1956) is a two-time Academy Award-winning American film actor, Emmy winning director, voice-over artist and movie producer who starred in family-friendly and screwball comedies before achieving notable success as a dramatic actor.
* I love what I do for a living, it's the greatest job in the world, but you have to survive an awful lot of attention that you don't truly deserve and you have to live up to your professional responsibilities and I'm always trying to balance that with what is really important.--- Tom Hanks
| | Family | Hanks was born in Concord, California. His Father, Amos Mefford Hanks was a chef and a distant relation of President Abraham Lincoln`s mother, Nancy Hanks. His Mother, Portuguese American Janer Marylyn Frager was a hospital worker: the two divorced in 1960. The family's three oldest children: Sandra (writer), Larry (professor) and Tom (actor) went their father, while the youngest, Jim, now an actor and film maker, remained with his mother in Red Bluff, California
Afterwards, both parents remarried, but the marriage ended in divorce after just 2 years, and Amos Hanks became a single parent, working long hours and relying on the children to fend for themselves often, an exercise in self-reliance that served the siblings well.

"Everybody in my family likes each other. But there were always about fifty people at the house. I didn't exactly feel like an outsider, but I was sort of outside it."
--- Tom Hanks
| | Highschool |
"I was a geek, a spaz. I was horribly, painfully, terribly shy. At the same time, I was the guy who'd yell out funny captions during filmstrips. But I didn't get into trouble. I was always a real good kid and pretty responsible."--- Tom Hanks
_________________________ Tom acted in school plays, including South Pacific, while attending Skyline High School in Oakland, California. Hanks studied theater at Chabot College, and after two years, transferred to California State University, Sacramento.

"Acting classes looked like the best place for a guy who liked to make a lot of noise and be rather flamboyant. I spent a lot of time going to plays. I wouldn't take dates with me. I'd just drive to a theater, buy myself a ticket, sit in the seat, and read the program, and then get into the play completely." --- Tom Hanks

In college Tom hadn't so much acting experience and, in fact, credits the fact that he couldn't get cast in a college play with actually starting his career - he went downtown, auditioned for a community theater play, was invited by the director of that play to go to Cleveland, and there his acting career started.
| | Career | At the age of 23, Tom goes to New York, where he made his film debut in the low-budget production "He Knows You're Alone" (1980), and got a part in the television movie Mazes and Monsters. The next year Hanks played a lead role on the ABC - TV Series Comedy "Bosom Bodies" which helped him get the attention of the director Ron Howard. After that with Ron's direction, Tom made his first big hit with the movie "Splash" (1984).
After three unsuccessful movies, Hanks made his breakthrough with the fantasy movie "Big" (1988), both at the Box-Office and within the industry, establishing Hanks as a major Hollywood talent. After some few attempts in another comedy movies, Tom tried his luck with some dramatic roles that later made him famous.
In early 1993, Hanks made his first big hits as a dramatic actor in "Sleepless in Seattle", co-staring with Meg Ryan (this was giving out to be their first of three romantic movies they starred in together), and then "Philadelphia", movie that brought Tom the Academy Award for Best Leading Actor. Hanks followed Philadelphia with the 1994 summer hit "Forrest Gump", which again brought him the second Academy Award, becoming only the second actor to have accomplished the feat of winning back-to-back Best Actor Oscars.
"When I read the script for Gump, I saw it as one of those kind of grand, hopeful movies that the audience can go to and feel some hope for their lot and their position in life. I got that from the movies a hundred million times when I was a kid, and I still do." --- Tom Hanks
Hanks's next project reunited him with Ron Howard in the 1995 movie "Appolo 13", in which he played astronaut and commander James Lovell. The movie also earned nine Academy Award nominations, winning two. The same year, Hanks starred in the animated blockbuster Toy Story as the voice of Woody and later in 1999 he starred again in its sequel as the same very hilarious Sherrif Woody
After those great hits, Tom started intensely his producer career, recording himself some excellent achievements such as: "Cast Away" (2000) - producer and actor, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" (2002), "The Polar Express" (2004), "The Ant Bully" (2006), "Evan Almighty" (2007), "Mamma Mia" (2008), the 4 Golden Globes awarded TV Series "John Adams" and many many others.
