Woody arrived at Cheers expecting to meet his "penpal" Coach (with whom he exchanged pens, instead of letters). Upon learning of his death, he filled the open bartender position, and was quickly accepted by the staff and regulars. He also developed a "big brother/little brother" relationship with Sam Malone, the owner of Cheers.

Did there seem to be a lot of Chinese restaurants around? Woody: Yeah, I guess so. Cliff: Were there a lot of uh signs hanging hither and yonder in Chinese there? Woody: Yeah, come to think of it. Norm: Lots of Chinese people walking around in the street I suppose. Woody: Yeah, but that could just be a coincidence you know. I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll call my landlady. If anyone would know, Mrs. Chung would.
[Rebecca is considering plastic surgery] Woody: Miss Howe, I may be in the minority here, but I'm tired of all this plastic surgery talk. I think you're perfect just like you are. Appears in:Kingpin Date(s):1996 Award(s):

| | Character back story: | | Inspiration for character: | | Age/Occupation: | | Personality type: | | Signature look: | | Resides: | | Character connections: | Fun facts/trivia:Bill Murray really bowled three strikes in a row in the scene where his character, Ernie McCracken does the same. The crowd's reaction is genuine and is actually for Murray. Woody Harrelson, on the other hand, was a terrible bowler and according to the Farrelly brothers maybe got one or two strikes throughout the filming.
Michael Keaton was originally considered for the Roy Munson role
In the scene in the bowling alley restaurant just before Ishmael is about to get beaten up, the three are eating burgers and fries. However, Roy is eating a salad because actor Woody Harrelson is a vegan.

We're talkin' the hula hoop of the nineties. Lancaster Bowl Manager: Look, I've told you. We don't need nuthin'. We don't even have a novelty machine in the men's room anymore. Roy: And you call yourselves a bowling alley?
Ishmael: You been drinking, Mr. Munson? Roy: I don't puke when I drink. I puke when I don't.
Roy: Hey, I hope you don't mind, I got up a little early, so I took the liberty of milking your cow for you. Yeah, it took a little while to get her warmed up, she sure is a stubborn one, whew. [Takes a drink from the bucket] Mr. Boorg: We don't have a cow. We have a bull. Roy: I'm gonna brush my teeth.
Roy: I know what you're thinking, but let me explain... [Claudia kicks Roy in the crotch] Roy: [very softly] Mommy. You must have a really wide foot because you got both of them
