Hillis's family moved to Normal, Illinois when she was six months old, then to Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin when she was three and Charlotte, North Carolina when she was thirteen. After living in New York City for a while, she moved to Los Angeles.

Her first acting job was a guest role in two 1999 episodes of the WB series Felicity. She next appeared as a guest on an episode of Fox's show FreakyLinks and MTV's Undressed. Her film debut was a starring role in Martin Edwards's independent romantic comedy All the Wrong Places.

Following her film debut, Hillis was cast as the title role in Rex Piano's romantic comedy The Month of August, opposite Mackenzie Astin. In addition, she voiced the title character of Randy Bobbitt's black and white film Hung Up on Elena opposite Matthew Fulchiron. Further television roles included an appearance on an episode of NBC's Baywatch and appearances on Inside Schwartz, Boomtown, and Less Than Perfect.

In 2004, Hillis's roles included Greener Mountains, Jessica Simpson's ABC comedy pilot Jessica, and a guest starring appearance in JAG. The following year, she appeared in The Commission, America Gun, and was a voice actor in Family Guy Presents: Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story. In the same year, she appeared in the films Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Must Love Dogs, as well as appearing on stage in the Odyssey Theatre's production of A Good Soldier in Los Angeles. In 2006 she appeared in the straight-to-DVD film Open Water 2: Adrift.

On March 9, 2007, Hillis' latest film, Michael O. Sajbel's adaptation of Jim Stovall's bestselling novel, The Ultimate Gift, was released. In the drama film, also starring James Garner, Drew Fuller and Abigail Breslin, Hillis co-starred as Breslin's single mother and Fuller's love interest Alexia.

Hillis is currently on set and will soon complete her upcoming films: Todd Breau's dark comedy Throwing Stars (with Scott Grimes, Jason London and Scott Michael Campbell) and writer-director Jeff Lowell's sci-fi romantic comedy How I Met My Boyfriend's Dead Fiancée (alongside Paul Rudd, Eva Longoria, Lake Bell and Jason Biggs). She will also soon wrap up the Farrelly brothers' romantic drama comedy film The Heartbreak Kid, starring Ben Stiller and Michelle Monaghan.
