After high school, he studied at New York City's American Academy of Dramatic Arts. In 1984, he received the school's coveted Jehlinger award. Shortly after graduation, Mouton heeded the advice of mentors and moved to Los Angeles in hopes of building a film career. He made his feature film debut starring opposite Jennifer Jason Leigh and Eric Stoltz in Sister, Sister (1987).
