Born in Windsor, Berkshire, Neame began his career as a production manager for Hammer Films, assisting on movies like Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed and Blood from the Mummy's Tomb. He went on to produce a number of popular TV shows in his native England, many with a historical bent like Flame Trees and Soldier Soldier. Neame also nurtured a career as a screenwriter, penning films such as 1969's The Love Factor and 1995's The Feast of July, as well as a Great Performances adaptation of Don Quixote. The multi-talented producer even took his skills to the stage, cowriting the music and lyrics for the stage musical Courtenay in 2003 and the opéra bouffe Lyssi in 2006.
