Prior to becoming a director, the San Francisco born Butler began his career as a three year old child actor. In 1918, he debuted on film in D.W. Griffith's The Greatest Thing in Life. He then went on to star in a series of films until 1929; concurrently Butler also appeared on the stage. In 1923, he became the stage manager of the Morosco Theater in Los Angeles, and four years later, became a director for Fox. He has also directed for Paramount, and Warner Bros. where he was popular for his dependability, and his consistent, quality work.
