He was contracted to Fox Studios in the 1920s, where he befriended up-and-coming director John Ford. For the next two decades, he showed up in leads, featured roles and bits in such Ford pictures as Hangman's House (1928), Four Sons (1928), Mary of Scotland (1936) and My Darling Clementine (1946).
