As a radio actor, Herlihy began working in the 1930s, appearing on such series as "America's Town Meeting," "Mister District Attorney," and "The Falcon." In 1947, he became the announcer for The Kraft Television Theater, and was a spokesman for the popular cheese company for 40 years. He convincingly played a radio commentator in Malcolm X, Zelig, and Radio Days, and appeared in The King of Comedy as "little ol' me, Ed Herlihy," the sidekick of talk show host Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis).
