Gilgun attended school at Rivington County Primary, Rivington, and went on to Southlands High School, Chorley, before studying acting at The Laine Johnson Theater School and Oldham Theater Workshop.Gilgun's first performance as a film actor is as Woody in This Is England, a semi-autobiographical feature film written and directed by Shane Meadows, which was released in the UK on the 27th April, 2007.
