The son of actress Florence Edwards he was on stage before he was three and went on to appear often on stage in serious plays and musicals. He came to Hollywood in 1930 to play his best-known role, Huckleberry Finn in Tom Sawyer (1930) and Huckleberry Finn the following year. His budding film career came to an end in 1935 when the 20-year-old Durkin was killed in an automobile accident.
