Born and raised in Winston-Salem, NC, Utt began his entertainment industry career in New York television and radio shortly after the end of WWII. He also dabbled as a stage manager on Broadway. He started producing television programs in the 1950s and, in the early '60s, was the associate producer for the series The Defenders and Coronet Blue.
