He was never a particularly strong screen presence, all the better since he was required to support such dynamic leading ladies as Marion Davies, Joan Crawford and Louise Brooks. Talking pictures permitted Gray to exhibit a pleasant singing voice, but it wasn't enough to sustain his stardom.
