Born and raised in London, Parker studied drama at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art; he began his professional career in1986, in a Young Vic's production of Romeo and Juliet. After that, he spent two years with the Royal Shakespeare Company where he garnered international acclaim for his performance opposite Dustin Hoffman in Sir Peter Hall's production of The Merchant of Venice, which played on both sides of the Atlantic. Parker made his feature debut in War Requiem, the first British made-for-television film to receive theatrical release.
