After graduating from North Carolina School of the Arts, he co-founded the Edge Theater and proceeded to write for the stage. His plays Baby Anger, Good as New, and Imagining Brad have all been published and performed. He is the author of the novels An Ocean in Iowa and What's Eating Gilbert Grape, which he also adapted for the screen. His next two screenplay adaptations, A Map of the World and About a Boy, were both critically acclaimed films that earned Hedges several award nominations.
